Medical Malpractice
Have you been a victim?
Medical malpractice isn’t something to be taken lightly – many people are critically injured or lose their lives to this completely preventable problem every day. Whether by surgical error, misdiagnosis, medication or anesthesia errors, people across the nation suffer greatly due to the mistakes or negligence of medical professionals in hospitals and in private clinic settings.
In 2013, Johns Hopkins researchers examined four separate studies that analyzed medical malpractice data, and found that:
- Medical Malpractice is the 3rd leading cause of death in the US
1 out of every 3 patients in a hospital will be the victim of a medical error
1 out of every 10 hospitalized patients will die directly from medical malpractice
On average, more than 250,000 people per year are reported to have died from medical malpractice by the hospitals reporting alone. This doesn’t account for those going unreported, people who are critically injured, or victims of diagnostic errors.
Malpractice claims can be broken down by type: 33% diagnosis errors, 23% surgical errors,18% treatment problems, 10% obstetrics, 10% anesthesia or medication errors
Covid 19 Pandemic
Due to the recent Covid 19 pandemic, medical systems have been put under extraordinary pressure coping with the staggering rise in patient care. An environment already rich with medical malpractice now grappling to keep up while staff is overworked, and lacking proper medical supplies at times to provide the standard of care necessary to keep patients safe. Further, many facilities are navigating the forced furlough or firing of staff due to vaccination mandates. All of the medical malpractice data recorded up to the beginning of the pandemic is unfortunately expected to pale in comparison to what we as a nation will experience with the new externalities forced upon our medical professionals in doctor offices and hospitals.
